If the patient does not require a same-day referral, consider the following additional elements. If your patient has co-morbid depression, be aware that treating PTSD first is often associated with an improvement in depression. But, if your patient’s depression is severe enough to make psychological treatment of the PTSD difficult, the depression should be treated first. Also carry out a physical health assessment if your patient has any physical health concerns or there are red flags.

Do not forget to assess your patient’s social needs and then make appropriate referrals accordingly (NICE, 2020).
